I had never heard of the film. I didn’t bother to research it to find out any details about it. All I knew was that on Wednesday, the Odeon Cinema charges five euro per film all day. After my driving lesson I was going to see ‘Baby Driver’. Continue reading Cinema times: ‘Baby Driver’

Murphy’s Classic Movies: ‘Roman Holiday’ (1953)

Some weeks ago I attended the Hepburn Season at the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield, and spent a sophisticated evening of film watching Katharine Hepburn, Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor in the camp classic ‘Suddenly Last Summer’ by Tennessee Williams. (Read about it HERE… Liz Taylor gave an impressively melodramatic performance in that movie – ‘We PROCURED for him Violet. We were BAIT… They DEVOURED him’. ‘Mother’s little holiday’ – the sequel

On extremely rare occasions film sequels are better than their predecessor. The only three that immediately spring to mind are ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’ ; ‘Addams’ Family Value’ (thanks to Joan Cusack playing the insane nanny Debbie) and ‘The Godfather Part 2’. While some people claim that ‘Aliens’ is better than ‘Alien’ I don’t agree. ‘Alien’ is a vampire movie on a spaceship and is all the more tense and nailbiting as a result. ‘Aliens’ is an action film in space. Cult film time: ‘Heathers’
Looking back Looking back with longing for seemingly better times is a waste of time. Remembering the past with fondness is a positive thing, but the yearning to return to some mythical bygone time seems to be a pointless exercise. Hindsight has that awkward little habit of providing 20/20 vision. Continue reading Cult film time: ‘Heathers’
‘Suddenly last summer’ Elizabeth Taylor realised she was being used for EVIL!

Yesterday evening I went to the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield. It is currently running a Katharine Hepburn film season, and is screening various highlights from her illustrious career. ‘Suddenly last summer’ from 1959 was last night’s film. Continue reading ‘Suddenly last summer’ Elizabeth Taylor realised she was being used for EVIL!
My cheatin’ heart

Yesterday after work I alighted from the bus – as I always do – at the top of O’Connell Street. Instead of taking a left and heading home, I glanced surreptitiously over both shoulders and swung a right on Parnell Street. Continue reading My cheatin’ heart
‘Prick up your ears’
A nifty way to catch full length films on Youtube is to use Google Translate to find out the Spanish translation of the film title that you want to watch. The film companies don’t seem to check these as much, so they are available for longer. Free and online.
This evening I saw ‘Susurros en tus oidos’, which is the Spanish language title of the 1987 English film ‘Prick up your ears’ – the biopic of famed English playwright Joe Orton, who in 1967 was bludgeoned to death with a hammer, by his long-term lover Kenneth Halliwell. So far, so grim.

Absolutely Fabulous – well I wasn’t expecting Chekhov, now was I, sweetie?
Last night I went to see ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ in the Cineworld on Parnell Street. The ticket cost 7.90 Euro. Which was a pleasant surprise, as every other time I have been to that cinema, in recent months the price for entry has been 12.50Euro. Must be an early-in-the-week price. Sing Street
Yesterday evening to celebrate St Paddy’s I went to the Cineworld on Parnell Steet to see an Irish film named Sing Street. Continue reading Sing Street
