Blooming marvelous

Bloomsday may not be a major event on the holiday or event calendars for most people, but it’s an absolutely genius and deeply Irish day. I can’t think of a better idea than to take a date – in this case June 16th – and to turn it into a day long celebration, for a character from a work of fiction. Continue reading Blooming marvelous
Bloomsday: James Joyce Day, June 16th

I have a gig on Friday with a band. The fact that I am unable to play a musical instrument, and possess a singing voice that sounds like a bag of cats in a blender (a metaphorical blender – I love cats and would never knowingly cause a moment of distress to one of those classy creatures) is entirely irrelevant. My services were requested, so I graciously accepted. I have been asked to perform to honour the works of Mr. James Joyce. Continue reading Bloomsday: James Joyce Day, June 16th
That’s a wrap, folks!

After an action packed fortnight the 14th International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival finished with a gala evening and awards ceremony last night. Continue reading That’s a wrap, folks!
I’m full of rage today

Does anyone ever wake up and get out on the wrong side of the bed? A day which begins ominously, and then proceeds to go downhill? All the while you are feeling irritable and not refreshed from the night’s sleep. Continue reading I’m full of rage today
Feeling a bit vomity at Foodie

I emerged from my pit at the usual time, feeling slightly anxious and irritable. Ill at ease with the world around me. Antsy is the word that best describes my state. This could only mean one thing – diabetic hypoglycaemia. That wonderful state when your blood sugar falls to a level below what is optimum for wellbeing. Left unattended it can kill you. This wasn’t a serious episode however. I had about an hour before I needed to worry. Continue reading Feeling a bit vomity at Foodie
The angry builder

Feeling scarcely human this morning, I boarded the bus. I had arrived too late at my stop to call in for a vivifying cup of scald; which would help wake me up in preparation for the day. Without the caffeine infusion I was not firing on all cylinders.
Boarding the bus I made my way to my usual seat. I closed my eyes. My fellow passengers held no interest for me today. I had no inclination to eavesdrop on their conversations or wonder about their lives. Continue reading The angry builder
Get on the bus, Gus.

It’s been a while since I’ve told a tale about my journey to work. This is nothing to be worried about. Each morning I still bravely face Dublin’s public transport system, and boldly go where thousands of others go with me – to the badlands of Dublin’s industrial estates. There’s a reason for my silence about my commuting adventures. You see, I have discovered that a forty minute bus journey is an opportunity for some extra sleep. Continue reading Get on the bus, Gus.
A cultural Monday

I was talking to someone over the holidays, who mentioned that he sometimes read my blog, and that he found it funny. While I kelp a straight face, on the inside I involuntarily preened. Tell me more. Continue reading A cultural Monday
A tribute to George Michael

After my driving lesson yesterday, I was distraught. Why does Attila (my instructor) keep stopping the lesson half way through for a toilet emergency. Once might be understandable, but it’s becoming a habit. Is he sending me a not so subliminal message that my driving skills are less than adequate? Or does he just have a sensitive tummy? I choose to go with the latter option. My motoring skills are progressing – at a snail’s pace maybe. Slowly, steadily wins the race. I’ll get there in the end. I will have a license by June – it might not be next June granted. But by some June in the future. Continue reading A tribute to George Michael
