A two hour driving lesson has just been completed. By me. It was as nail-biting and terrifying as you could imagine. Continue reading Driving school

A visit to the land of schnitzel and strudel

Next week I am going to be a high powered business executive, with radioactive shoulder-pads. I shall visit the town of Freiburg-im-Breisgau in south west Germany. To visit a customer. For meetings. I will be ruthless and driven. I shall drive a hard bargain, and only think of hostile takeovers and share prices. And stuff. Continue reading A visit to the land of schnitzel and strudel
Bus strike

Tomorrow Dublin Bus goes on strike. So failing a last minute resolution of the dispute I have to find alternative means of getting to work. Continue reading Bus strike
The riddle of the tattoo

There is a gentleman on my bus to work each day, whose left arm is a tattoo sleeve. His entire arm from the wrist to the shoulder is covered in body art. His right arm still has some unadorned skin visible but this area is rapidly shrinking. He has some permanent paintings etched onto his neck also. Continue reading The riddle of the tattoo
‘She’s not your auntie, she’s not BLOOD’

I am a slightly worried soul today. I am concerned that not all is well in the world of my morning-bus travel companions – Beyoncé and her mother Bruiser. Continue reading ‘She’s not your auntie, she’s not BLOOD’
I want to ride my bicycle

Having lived for decades in Amsterdam, I considered myself a bit of a cycling connoisseur. The bike-path network in the Netherlands is vast. And hopping on your two wheeler is the fastest, cheapest and most efficient means of getting to pretty much any destination in the city (I once had a job where it took fifteen minutes to reach by bike, but thirty minutes by public transport). As a result everyone cycles – from the very young to the very old. Although the site of a baby strapped onto the handlebars as the parent whizzes by is still a sight that gives me shivers. Now this is a blog title I can work with. Continue reading Taken up the Áras
My cheatin’ heart

Yesterday after work I alighted from the bus – as I always do – at the top of O’Connell Street. Instead of taking a left and heading home, I glanced surreptitiously over both shoulders and swung a right on Parnell Street. Continue reading My cheatin’ heart
Back to school

I was late for work this morning.
I blame the children of the nation. For choosing today – the first of September – to further their education. The inconsiderate little monsters. Continue reading Back to school
Red hot chili bastards

Last week it was announced, that the popular music combo ‘Red Hot Chili Peppers’ were playing a gig in the Point Depot near my house on December 20th. Being a creature that grew up in the 80s and 90s, this was thrilling news. Not only was their music gripping to my teenaged soul, I also had strong feelings for the lead singer Anthony Kiedis.
