At 1.15pm on Friday I received a call to tell me that my travel companion was ten minutes from my office. I started gathering my belongings in preparation for departure. Only then did my boss tell me that an urgent report was required. Cursing under my breath I downloaded it – quickly scanned it, hit send on the email. I suspect I will be asked about it on Monday. But there was no time to think about it then. I was off to Mayo for the weekend. Ballina to be more precise about the location. Continue reading Way out west – Mayo

Thank goodness for my iron discipline

There’s a very bizarre competitive edge in my company. Not over something irrelevant like performing well at the job. Oh no. The killer instinct among my colleagues is limited to those folk who are married. And it relates to their baking prowess. Continue reading Thank goodness for my iron discipline
Itchy feet

When I was twenty-one, I was a graduate of a University of Limerck arts course. Working in a computer company in Shannon doing customer service, I endured for about a year in that job before fleeing to Dublin. Continue reading Itchy feet
Liar, liar. Pants on fire.

‘I cannot believe the arrogance of them, asking you to change the backorder like that, when they know that this will cause quality issues further down the line. Our rules are very clear.’
‘I know, ’tis shockin’ so it is, so it is.’

A bookish nerd – my good self – and ‘A perilous margin’

Since the dim and distant days of my youth I have been a voracious reader. From the early days of my Enid Blyton addiction; to the ‘Just William’ series by Richmal Crompton; by way of Roald Dahl, I have devoured books.
Adolescence saw my advance to proper, grown up books by the likes of Aggie Christie; Stephen King and Judith Krantz – among countless hundreds of other writers and thousands of books. During my grim teenage years I was averaging about two full books per week. Intravenously. Continue reading A bookish nerd – my good self – and ‘A perilous margin’
Staged reading

My theatre group will be staging a showcase of short, original pieces in the Pearse Centre at the end of February. This biannual – as opposed to biennial – event (I had to research the difference on google) is called ‘Uncut’. Being a considerate sort I’ll reveal that we do these showcases two times a year, and not once every two years. Continue reading Staged reading
Theatre Times: ‘The spinning heart’ and ‘Hero’
Yesterday evening I went to the theatre. Not an unusual occurrence for me – as anyone who reads this blog on a semi-regular basis can confirm. Continue reading Theatre Times: ‘The spinning heart’ and ‘Hero’
Get on the bus, Gus.

It’s been a while since I’ve told a tale about my journey to work. This is nothing to be worried about. Each morning I still bravely face Dublin’s public transport system, and boldly go where thousands of others go with me – to the badlands of Dublin’s industrial estates. There’s a reason for my silence about my commuting adventures. You see, I have discovered that a forty minute bus journey is an opportunity for some extra sleep. Continue reading Get on the bus, Gus.
Theatre Times: The Corps Ensemble and ‘From Eden’
My weekend of culture continued on Sunday. I attended a showcase of new writing by a group called The Corps Ensemble at the Viking Theatre in Clontarf.
